October 29, 1953 - November 20, 2016
Richard Garrett Woofter age 63 of West 2nd Street, Weston, WV; departed this life on Sunday afternoon, November 20, 2016 at his residence surrounded by his loving wife and 2 daughters. Born October 29, 1953 in Weston, WV; Richard was the son of the late Clayton and Clara Glo Garrett Woofter. Richard was a graduate of Lewis County High School, class of 1971, he was also a graduate of Glenville State College and West Virginia University where he received 2 Masters’ degrees. He was a retired art teacher for the Lewis County Board of Education where he had 38 years experience. Richard, known as “Mr. Woofter”, Rich or Wolf to his extended family and friends, dedicated himself to his family, friends and community. He never considered leaving Weston, it was his home. His passion for art was shared with the hundreds of students he taught as an art teacher in Lewis County, until his retirement in 2013. His daughters share that passion and received their teaching degrees and teach in West Virginia. He represented his fellow educators as president of the LCWVEA. After his retirement he continued his commitment to the Lewis County education system by becoming a member of the Lewis County Board of Education. His belief in the students and educators in Lewis County was profound. He was a member of and served in various capacities in organizations such as the Lion, the Eagles, the Elk’s, the Moose, the Patriot Guard, and Riders 1376. He tirelessly offered his artistic skills to events throughout Lewis County. If you see a sign announcing a community pancake dinner or breakfast, it was probably done by Richard. He was recognized for his participation in the Moose by receiving the prestigious degree of Pilgrim. Richard never met a stranger. He would help anybody, at any time, opening his door and heart to people known and unknown who needed help. He was known for annual social events at his home. Most notably his annual OHP held around Halloween for close to forty years. He loved to travel and traveled extensively the last couple of years on his Harley Trike visiting friends and new places. You could easily describe him as a man who; “Let no moss grow under his feet”. Richard’s passing was a great loss to Weston, Lewis County, his family and friends. Many who read this will have heavy hearts but I’m sure Richard would rather you recall a fond memory of him with a smile than mourn him. I’m sure the good Lord is smiling at the angel and artist he received in Heaven. On February 8, 1980 Richard was united in marriage to Janice Dean Woofter, who survives at their Weston home. Surviving are 2 daughters, Joy Woofter and fiancée Luis Rondon and Jana Woofter and long time companion, Richie Stephens, all of Martinsburg, West Virginia, his 4 legged grand babies “Buddy the Dog”, “Charming”, his niece Danni Glo, and numerous cousins. Along with his parents, Richard was preceded in death by his older brother, Danny Paul Woofter. Richard’s request for cremation has been honored and a celebration of life will be conducted at 1:07 PM; Saturday November 26, 2016 at the St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 206 East 2nd Street, Weston, WV, 26452 with Father John Valentine officiating.
