Ellis Hayward Mick 93 of Heaters Fork Burnsville, WV (Gilmer County) departed this life on Monday, September 10, 2018 peacefully at home..
He was born June 30, 1925 in Gilmer County, son of the late Okey and Evalena Heater Mick.
Hayward was a United States Navy Veteran during World War II. During his time in the service, Hayward was assigned to the USS Saratoga in the Pacific Ocean, and was in Guam during the bombing of Pearl Harbor. While stationed in the Pacific, Hayward fought at the battle for Wake Island and Sypan, and also got his High School Diploma.
After the war, Hayward became an over the road truck driver, dispatcher, and traffic manager. He retired in May of 1985 as a Traffic Manager for Sawhill Tubular in Wheatland, PA. In his spare time, he enjoyed hunting, bowling, riding ATV’s, and spending time with his loving family.
On May 25, 1946 he was united in marriage to Orneda Tomblin Mick who preceded him in death on January 31, 2002.
Surviving are 5 children, Carl Mick and wife Barb of PA; Sharon Mick Taylor of WV; Darla Stonebraker and husband William of PA; Rozilla Lizzie and husband Kirk of PA; and Martha Wingard and husband Scott also of PA. Also surviving are 13 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great grandchildren.
Along with his wife and parents, Hayward is preceded in death by 3 siblings, Charles M. Mick, Rebecca Sayti, and Vala Knauff, and his daughter-in-law, Alyce Sweesy Mick.
Hayward’s request for Cremation has been honored and the family will have a Celebration of Life at the Glenville Church of Christ, 221 Powell Street, Glenville, WV 26351 at 2:00 PM; Saturday, September 15, 2018 with Rev. Gene Miller officiating. Following services, Full Military Honors will be conducted in front of the church by the United States Navy, and the Lewis County Honor Guard. Family and friends will be received from 1:00-2:00 PM; Saturday at the Church. Once all services have concluded, the family will have a meal at the church, and all are encouraged to come and share in food and fellowship.
In lieu of flowers, the family request memorial contributions be made to the charity of your choice in Hayward’s honor.
