Arnold Jackson “Pap” Smith 84 of James Street, Glenville, WV departed this life on Thursday, October 26, 2017 at the Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, following an extended illness. Born March 28, 1933 in Gilmer County, Arnold is the son of the late Grover and Edna Beall Smith.
Arnold was a humble man who enjoyed spending time with family and friends, spoiling his grandchildren and great grandchildren whenever possible, and he loved the outdoors. In his spare time, he enjoyed farming, hunting, and gardening.
Arnold was also a very active member of the Dawson Baptist Church. He loved attending Sunday services and would attend all the church functions he possibly could. At the church, his roles included but were not limited to Deacon, Sunday school teacher, and song leader.
Arnold was an Army Veteran of the Korean Conflict, he worked at a Foundry in Grafton, Ohio, he worked as a mechanic which was a job he enjoyed, he owned and operated the Hay City Service Station with his uncle for a time, and then retired from Equitable Gas as a compressor operator.
On November 24, 1956 Arnold was united in marriage to Mary Mae “Nanny” Smith, who preceded Arnold in death on February 9, 2016.
Surviving is daughter, Roselea “Dottie” Sprouse of Glenville, WV; sister, Virginia Walton of Claremore, OK; grandchildren, Johnathon Sprouse and wife Miranda “Randi” of Glenville, WV; Lisa Radcliff and husband Argil of Weston, West Virginia, and great-grandchildren, Jackson Sprouse of Glenville and Hoyt Radcliff of Weston.
Along with his wife and parents, Arnold was preceded in death by 4 sisters, Doris Cooper, Carrie Smith, Mary Smith, and Vernie Fisher, and 3 brothers, Alfred, Willard, and Walker Smith.
Funeral Services will be conducted at the Ellyson Mortuary Inc. 2 Vanhorn Drive, Glenville, WV; 26351 at 3:00 PM; Sunday, October 29, 2017 with Elder Larry Fisher officiating. Burial will follow in the Stalnaker Cemetery in Glenville. Friends will be received from 1-3 PM, Sunday afternoon at the mortuary.
