November 16, 1939 - November 10, 2017
Sun Ae “Susie” Chon Sandy went to be with her Lord and Savior on November 10, 2017 after a short illness. Born November 16, 1939 in North Korea, she and her family overcame many obstacles to settle in South Korea when she was eleven years old. Some fifteen years later when she was working at the Officers’ Mess as a waitress at an American military base, she met the love of her life, SFC Waitman M. Sandy. They married in 1966 and moved to his hometown of Glenville, West Virginia.
As the wife of a Baptist minister, she was active at Leading Creek and Stewart’s Creek churches where her husband preached, as well as Sand Fork Baptist Church where they were long-time members. She loved working with children, and enjoyed singing and teaching the children of Sand Fork Baptist Church to sing hymns in Korean. She also regularly sang in the choir at the Gilmer County Senior Center. Susie was a passionate person and enjoyed sharing her love of family and Jesus with everyone she met.
Susie operated a home child care center for more than forty years, and was known as “Mamaw Susie” by many Gilmer County children. Those in her care became like family to her, and they grew up on a blend of Appalachian and Korean foods. Favorites on the menu were chicken and dumplings with a side of kimchi and rice. She was especially known for making the best egg rolls around.
She is survived by her son, Robert Sandy and daughter-in-law Bobbi Sandy of Glenville; daughter Connie Stout and son-in-law David O’Dell of Glenville; grandson Nathan Stout of Glenville; brother Chang Ho Chon and sister-in-law Woon Sun Chon of Olathe, Kansas; brother Chang Yung Chon and sister-in-law Young Hee Chon of Olathe, Kansas; older sister Sun Duk Kim and brother-in-law Sung Soo Kim of South Korea; and younger sister Ouk Hee Jung and brother-in-law Yung Ro Jung of St. Joseph, Missouri; brother-in-law Tong Shin of Leawood, Kansas; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband of forty-nine years, Waitman M. Sandy of Glenville; sister Sun Ja Chon of Kansas; and sister Ouk Hoa Shin of Leawood, Kansas.
Visitation will be Monday, November 13 from 5:00 to 8:00 at Sand Fork Baptist Church. The funeral will be Tuesday, November 14 at 11:00 at Sand Fork Baptist Church with Reverend Kenny Fisher officiating. Burial will follow at the Meadow Lane Cemetery in Glenville.
Ellyson Mortuary, Inc. is honored to assist the family of Sun Ae Sandy with arrangements.
