William O. “Auttie” Self Jr., 79 of Cox’s Mills, WV; departed this earthly life in the early morning hours of Sunday, December 31, 2023 at his residence, following a brief illness.

He was born February 1, 1944 in Gilmer County, son of the late William O. and Ruth (Queen) Self.

Auttie was a coal miner and worked in the timber industry. In his spare time, he enjoyed working with his horses, trail riding, hunting, spending time with family and friends, spoiling his grandchildren and great-grandchildren whenever possible, and he was a Baptist by faith.

On February 24, 1964 Auttie was united in marriage to Patricia (Pritt) Self, who survives at their Cox’s Mills home.

Surviving are 5 children, Karen Powers and husband Rick of Alum Bridge, WV; Jeanie Self and companion Danny of Williamstown, WV; Shirley Weaver and husband Donald, Kenny Self and wife Tina, and Roger Self, all of Cox’s Mills, 9 grandchildren, Greg Self and wife Crystal, Billy Weaver, Donald Weaver, Brian Self, Matthew Self, Samantha Helmick, Dylon Helmick and companion Whitney, Eldon Short and wife Brianna, and Josh Short and companion Nikki, and 4 great-grandchildren, Hailey Short, Harper Short, Kensley Helmick, and Owen Weaver.

Also surviving are 4 siblings, Phyllis Bowie of Akron, OH; Dave Self and wife Ann of Arnoldsburg, WV; Mary Cottrill of Elizabeth, WV; and Connie Patterson and husband Jerry also of Elizabeth, Son-in-law, George Short of Troy, WV; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and many other wonderful family and friends.

Along with his parents, Auttie is preceded in death by his loving daughter, Sharon Short, grandson George William “JR” Short Jr., great-grandson, Hogan Short, and 2 siblings, Patricia Deen and Frank Self.

A funeral service will be conducted at the Ellyson Mortuary, Inc., 2 Vanhorn Drive, Glenville, WV; 26351 at 1:00 PM; Friday, January 5, 2024 with Pastor Bryan Groves officiating. Burial will follow in the Horn Creek Baptist Church Cemetery near Cox’s Mills. Friends will be received from 11:00 – 1:00 PM; Friday at the mortuary in Glenville.
