Jerry Leon Helmick, 84 of Normantown, WV; departed this earthly life in the early afternoon hours of Wednesday, December 11, 2024 at his daughters residence in Normantown, following an extended illness.
He was born January 29, 1940 in Normantown, son of the late Samuel Helmick and Belva (Hewitt) Jett.
Jerry is a graduate of Marietta High School, class of 1958 and a veteran of the United States Air Force, having served his country with honor and distinction. He also had 20 plus years in the WV National Guard. Jerry worked in law enforcement for most of his working life, serving the city of Glenville for several years. He also worked for Glenville State College where he was the first security officer hired by the college. Jerry retired as a Captain in 1999 with 34 years’ experience serving his community. He was a member of the National Fraternal order of Police and member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows as well.
In his spare time, Jerry enjoyed playing and singing music, collecting guns & was an amateur gun smith, woodworking, working on antique cars, spending time with family and friends, and spoiling his grandkids whenever possible.
Surviving are his 2 loving children, Patty Singleton and husband Garry of Normantown, and James Helmick of Lynn Camp, 2 grandsons, Derek Singleton and wife Morgan of Cedarville and Ryan Singleton and fiancée Lacy Whystell of Glenville and a great-granddaughter, Braleigh Singleton.
Also surviving are 2 step great-grandkids, Maysen Boggs and Lo Pulmano, and 2 step great-great grandkids Wrenley Boggs, and Laken Duskey, and a host of other wonderful family and friends.
Along with his parents, Jerry is preceded in death by 3 half siblings, Darrel, Betty, and Gloria Helmick.
A funeral service will be conducted at the Ellyson Mortuary, Inc., 2 Vanhorn Drive, Glenville, WV; 26351 at 1:00 PM; Monday, December 16, 2024 with Pastor Doug Moss officiating. Burial will follow in the Mt. Carmel Baptist Church Cemetery with Full Military honors provided by the United States Air Force and Braxton Co. VFW. Friends will be received from 11:00 – 1:00 Monday at the mortuary in Glenville.
