George A. Sponaugle, 102 of Cedarville, WV; departed this earthly life in the morning hours of Sunday, February 23, 2025 at the Glenville Center Nursing Facility following an extended illness.
He was born March 18, 1922 in Cedarville, WV; son of the late George A. and Daisy (Beckett) Sponaugle.
George was a coal miner with 20 years’ experience in the mines. He was also a farmer all his life and was very active in his community in and around the Cedarville area. He is a Baptist by faith and enjoyed hunting, trapping, spending time with family and friends, and living the quiet life in the Cedarville community. He was a charter member of the WV Trapper’s Association. In 2009 he was recognized as the WV trapper of the year.
In August of 1941 George was united in marriage to Elaine (Norman) Sponaugle, who preceded him in death on February 10, 1998.
Surviving are 3 children, Sharon Hanna of Camden on Gauley, WV; Larry “Bud” Sponaugle and wife Karen of Cedarville, and Kelley Sponaugle and wife Carol also of Cedarville, 3 grandchildren, Tanya Isenhart (Norman), Kyle Sponaugle (Jennifer), and Cara Sponaugle, 3 great-grandchildren, Aiden Isenhart, Reagan Sponaugle, and Mason Sponaugle, and special nephew, Mike Sponaugle and wife Leah of Cedarville.
Along with his wife and parents, George is preceded in death by 4 siblings, Muriel Marshall, David Sponaugle, Geneva Stout, and Ethel Oliva Miller.
A funeral service will be conducted at the Ellyson Mortuary, Inc., 2 Vanhorn Drive, Glenville, WV; 26351 at 11:00 AM; Saturday, March 1, 2025 with Pastor Larry Fisher officiating. Burial will follow in the Cedarville Cemetery. Friends will be received from 4:00 – 7:00 PM; Friday evening at the Mortuary in Glenville.
In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial contributions be made to the Cedarville Community Cemetery, 9497 Cedar Creek Road, Cedarville, WV 26611 in honor of George.
