John Paul Roberts of Glenville, West Virginia, courageously passed from this life into the arms of his Lord and Savior on Thursday, June 18, 2015, at his residence surrounded by his family.
He was born September 2, 1932 in Boone County, West Virginia, son of the late George M. “Sam” Roberts and Sarah Madge Bell Roberts. He was united in marriage September 16, 1954 to Doris Malona.
John Paul graduated from Tanner High School in 1951 and shortly thereafter was drafted into the Army. John served his country during the Korean War, where he was stationed in Ft. Eustice, Virginia. After leaving the military, he moved to Elyria, Ohio, and worked at Bendix Westinghouse until it closed. Thereafter, he moved to Jackson County, WV where he spent 17 years of his life and where he and Doris raised their small children. John Paul was an employee at Kaiser Aluminum. While working there he also owned and maintained a 100 acre farm, and began his carpentry business. In 1975 he returned to Gilmer County with his family, where he owned and operated Roberts Builders, Inc., before retiring in 2010. He was well known in his community and will be remembered for his integrity, as well as being an avid sports fan.
Surviving are his wife of 60 years, Doris “Muggs” Roberts; sons, Owen Paul “Buzz” Roberts (Anita) and Jon Patrick Roberts, a daughter, Jayne Evans, all of Glenville, West Virginia, and daughter Gina Schweinsberg (R.L.) of St. Mary’s, West Virginia; his grandchildren, Sarah Jayne Hacker (Josh), of St. Mary’s, West Virginia, William Patrick Morrison, of Newport, Ohio, John T.P. Evans, Jacob S. M. Evans, Matthew Owen Roberts, Hannah Lynn Roberts, Patrick Bryce Roberts and Jon Payton Roberts, all of Glenville, West Virginia; great grandchildren Laura Quinn Hacker and Caroline Morgan Hacker of St. Mary’s, West Virginia. Also surviving is a brother, Reginald “Reggie” Roberts (Rose) of Glenville, West Virginia; and a special family member Jeramey Grogg (Corrie) of Canton, Ohio.
He was preceded in death by his parents, George M. “Sam” Roberts and Sarah Madge Bell Roberts, sisters, Helen Louise Roberts and Mary Virginia Roberts, brother, Bobby Gene Roberts, and half-brothers, Leroy Roberts, George Roberts and Jack Roberts.
In lieu of flowers the family request memorial contributions be made to the John Paul Roberts Memorial Scholarship Fund, Calhoun Banks, 904 North Lewis Street, Glenville, WV; 26351.
John’s request for cremation has been honored and a celebration of life will be conducted at the Ellyson Mortuary Inc., 2 Vanhorn Drive, Glenville, WV; 26351 at 12:00 noon, Saturday June 27, 2015 with Pastor Bryan Groves officiating.
