Josephine Schirripa Nocida, after a well-lived, much appreciated life of over 99 years, passed away on July 3, 2016, at the home of her daughter, Mildred Short, in Vienna, WV. Born on August 11, 1916 to John (Giovanni) and Frances (Francesca Nocera) Schirripa at Lamberts Run, WV. She married Carmelo Nocida in Saint Ann’s Church, Shinnston, WV on January 25, 1935. They made their home and raised their family in Glenville, WV. Her ordinary life there was filled with extraordinary moments taking care of her husband and seven children. She was blessed with and always grateful for many friends and good neighbors. For many years she attended and was an active member in the Altar Society at the Good Shepherd Catholic Church. There is a quote that says, “You can easily judge the character of a person by how they treat those who can do nothing for them.” The unexpected visitor was always welcome. Her home was a gathering place for friends, family and local and visiting priests. She was a gracious hostess and a great cook. Her generosity and kindness touched the hearts of many over the years. This was evident in the many cards, letters, phone calls and visits that she received and treasured. She not only loved Glenville, where she said, “The sun always shines” but was a proud West Virginian. Alzheimer’s took from her much of what we take for granted, but was unable to take away her soul, spirit and wit. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her sisters and their spouses: Mary Larry (Sullivan) and Grace Oliverio (Pet); brothers, Joseph Schirripa, Domenick Schirripa (Daphne), and Samual Schirripa; daughter-in-law, Juanita Nocida; son-in-law, Gene Maston. Surviving are her sons, Domenick Nocida and Louie Nocida (Joyce Carr); daughters, Mildred Short, Mary Jo Smith (Keith), Francis Currey, Grace Maston, and Catherine Flint (John); seven grandchildren; Dina Currey Vickers, John Currey, Nicholas Nocida, Paul Nocida, Julie Smith Potter, Michael Smith, John “Bo” Flint; 2 great-grandchildren: Brett Potter and Nicole Nocida, who called her “Nunny”, many nieces and nephews—each one her “favorite”, sisters-in-law, Ann Schirripa and Mary Schirripa. Thank you to her many loyal friends over the years—Loretta Morrison, her fun beautician; Norman Anderson, a friend mom could count on 24-7; doctors who gave her loving care, Dr. Thomas Herrmann and Nurse Lori; Dr. Bruce Winans; Dr. Lawrence Minardi; Dr. Paul Modi; the EMT’s who treated her with respect and a gentle touch; the Alzheimer’s Association, especially JT for invaluable guidance during Mom’s illness; Ellyson Mortuary Inc; Housecalls Hospice—the “Angels Among Us”—words cannot express our gratitude, and for the endless love and support from family. Visitation will take place at Good Shepherd Catholic Church, Glenville, WV Thursday, July 7, at 11:00 a.m. before the Mass of Christian Burial at noon with Rev. James R. DeViese Jr., J.C.L. officiating. Interment will be at the Shinnston Memorial Cemetery.
