Clarence Darl Mathess, age 92 of Cox’s Mills, WV; departed this life on Tuesday afternoon, May 14, 2019 at the Genesis Health Care, Glenville Center following an extended illness.
He was born October 22, 1926 in Wirt County, WV; son of the late Darl and Leafy Mills Mathess.
Clarence worked as a roustabout in the oil and gas industry all his life, having retired from Pennzoil in the early 1980’s. In his spare time, Clarence enjoyed woodworking, singing, and playing bluegrass music, and attending Sunday services at the Newberne Methodist Church.
On November 4, 1944 Clarence was united in marriage to Maxine Louise Davis Mathess, who preceded him in death on May 8, 1996.
Surviving are 3 children, Clarence A. Mathess and wife Betty Jean of Washington, WV; Larry Ray Mathess and wife Vicki of Buckhannon, WV; and Rodney Joe Mathess and wife Sallie of Cox’s Mills, and 2 siblings, Clifford Mathess of Grafton, OH; and Enid Veon of Parkersburg, WV.
Also surviving are 5 grandchildren, Brian Mathess (Niki) of Parkersburg, WV; Steven R. Mathess (Wendy) of Jane Lew, WV; Aimee D. Snyder (Michael) of Morgantown, WV; Danny Mathess (Barbara) of Cox’s Mills, and Tanya A. Tuttle (Matt) of Millwood, WV; 16 great-grandchildren, Brayden Mathess, Evan Mathess, Samantha Hanna (Nick), Shelby Sams, Branson Mathess, Gracie Snyder, Jenson Snyder, Madison Breyer Mathess, Macayla M. Criss (Joseph), Taylor Mathess, Haylie Reynolds, Hayden Reynolds, Emma Tuttle, Danielle Ireland, Jake Ireland, and Michael Ireland, and several nieces, nephews, cousins, and many other family and friends.
Along with his wife and parents, Clarence is preceded in death by an infant daughter, Marsha Dawn Mathess, a granddaughter, Jami E. Sams, and a great-grandson, Breyer Mathess.
A funeral Service will be conducted at the Ellyson Mortuary, Inc., 2 Vanhorn Drive, Glenville, WV; 26351 at 1:00 PM; Friday, May 17, 2019 with Rev. Bill Hunt officiating. Burial will follow in the Wolverton Cemetery in Munday, WV. (Wirt Co.) Friends will be received from 10:00 – 1:00 PM; Friday morning at the mortuary in Glenville.
