Berthyl A. Divers, 99, of Bethesda, MD and Dresher, PA, passed away on May 13, 2019, in PA, with her niece and nephew by her side. Berthyl was born in Gilmer County, WV, on Feb. 10, 1920, to Arthur and Letty Gay (Edwards) Divers.
After graduating from Sand Fork High School in 1938, Berthyl completed a 2-year secretarial program at Mountain State College in Parkersburg.
Berthyl’s first job was at the Gilmer County Courthouse. When men began to be drafted for service in WWII, Berthyl joined the war effort by accepting a civilian position in the Navy Department in Washington, D.C. Following the war, Berthyl worked for 28 years as a legal secretary at Wendroth, Lind & Ponack, the premier patent law firm in Washington, D.C. Seeking work closer to her home in Bethesda, MD, in order to better care for her mother who lived with her there for 13 years, Berthyl worked at AARP for 4 years before retiring to part-time work with various local attorneys.
In addition to her parents, Berthyl was preceded in death by her brother, Garrel A. Divers.
Survivors include her nephew, John G. (Joyce) Divers, of Hot Springs, AR; her niece, Dreamalee (David) Brotz, of Glenside, PA; 2 great-nephews and 2 great-nieces; and 6 great-great nephews and nieces. She is also survived by 6 first cousins and their families.
Berthyl will be remembered by those who knew her as a creative problem-solver, an avid gardener, a fanatic saver, and especially as a kind, selfless woman with a quick wit.
A graveside service was conducted at the Otterbein Cemetery at 1:00 PM; Monday, May 20, 2019 with Rev. Ronzel Roberts officiating. Berthyl was laid to rest in the family plot with her parents.
Ellyson Mortuary, Inc, Glenville, WV, was in charge of arrangements.
