Lauretta J. Massey, a resident of Canton, passed from this life on January 2, 2022, at the age of 79.

Lauretta is survived by Lawrence Massey, husband; Richard Lee Wagner, son and spouse, Gary Moy of Reseda, California; Step-daughter Cathi (Massey) Blease and son, Jaron Ellisore, of South Carolina; Sisters In-laws: Hazel Backus, Lou Lindberg, Joyce Hinken, Julia Dechants, Georgie Coffey, and Fleeta Trinary and Life-Long Best Friends: Eula (Wright) and Gene Marks; Rosazala Montgomery; Mary Ann Swinehart.

Lauretta was preceded in death by:  Richard Lee Wagner Sr, husband; Martha Ann and Russell Flemming Hiney, parents; Kenneth Wagner, son; and Lynne Massey, step-daughter.

Lauretta graduated from Sand Fork High School in Sand Fork, West Virginia.  She went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts in Education from Glenville State College in Glenville, West Virginia.  Lauretta taught at Featherstone Elementary in Woodbridge, Virginia and in the Plymouth-Canton Schools in Plymouth, Michigan.

Lauretta was a proud wife, mother and homemaker and taught Sunday school at the Main Street Baptist Church in Plymouth, Michigan.  She enjoyed sewing, was an avid quilter, loved gardening and canning.  Lauretta took up bird watching, was an enthusiastic reader and enjoyed poetry.  She will be remembered by many as a “pie expert.”

Lauretta’s favorite quote:  “Don’t cry so bitterly, but remember this day, and resolve with all your soul, that you will never know another like it” was from Little Women.

The family will receive visitors on Wednesday, January 5, from 5-8 p.m. at the L.J. Griffin Funeral Home, 42600 Ford Road (west of Lilley Road) in Canton, MI.

Lauretta’s final resting place will be in Hiney Cemetery in Glenville, West Virginia.

A funeral service will be conducted locally by Ellyson Mortuary, Inc., 2 Vanhorn Drive, Glenville, WV; 26351 at 11:00 AM; Saturday, January 8, 2022 with Pastor  Bryan Groves officiating. Burial will follow in the Hiney Cemetery near Linn, WV. Friends will be received from 4-7 PM; Friday evening at the mortuary in Glenville.
