In October 1967 Spurgeon Mortuary, Inc. was established by Jennings “Jay” and Jean Spurgeon. They continued to operate the Mortuary until their retirement in 1983 at which time Terry L. Ellyson became President & CEO. The name was changed to Spurgeon-Ellyson Mortuary, Inc. and eventually shortened to Ellyson Mortuary, Inc. In 2004, son Terry “Lee” Ellyson II joined the business as a licensed funeral director/embalmer.
Early in 2010, the structure was destroyed by fire and rebuilt that same year. The new building officially opened December 2010.
Ellyson Mortuary, Inc. has always been locally owned and operated.
Staff
Terry L. Ellyson, President & LIC is a 1973 graduate of Lewis County High School, Weston, WV. He attended Glenville State College and is a 1977 graduate of Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science. He is a licensed funeral director/embalmer. Terry and his wife, Denise have been married since 1975. In his spare time, he enjoys spending time with his granddaughter and attending car shows.
Terry “Lee” Ellyson II, Vice President & Director/Embalmer, graduated from Gilmer County High School and Glenville State College. He is also a 2004 graduate of Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science. He and his wife Wakasa are the parents of a daughter, Allie. In his free time he enjoys spending time outdoors and NASCAR.
